The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and saw extensive combat duty in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the atom bomb in July 1945, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. It was four days before all survivors were rescued, and only 316 of a crew of 1,196 survived. Captain Charles Butler McVay III was court martialed, but was granted clemency in February 1946.
